Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities
Requirements & Expectations
Seasonal volunteers must:
be 18 years of age or older,
be in good health and physically strong enough to carry 15 pounds of equipment, endure hours in the hot summer sun and capable of digging large amounts of sand by hand,
be able to commit one or more days a week of volunteer activity as needed,
have a valid Florida Driver’s License,
be able commit to a minimum of one regular morning per week during the entirety of time between April 15th and October 31st.
Each morning, we begin each patrol 30 minutes before sunrise which changes throughout the season. Being on patrol requires an unpredictable 1-4 hours on the beach in the morning (depending on nesting frequency that season), and an ability to walk for several miles in soft sand while carrying equipment.
It's grueling field work, especially in the heat of the summer which is the busiest nesting time. We get hot, sweaty and covered in sand. We love it!
If you're interested in receiving an application to join Mickler's Landing Turtle Patrol, complete the form below to be added the list. You will receive an application in mid-February for the subsequent nesting season. Submitting an application does not guarantee participation.
We are fortunate to watch beautiful sunrises each morning.
Determining the hatch and emergence success during a nest productivity assessment (nest evaluation).
During public nest evaluation, if we find hatchlings they are released on site if their health and conditions allow.
